Quarry Bank Woollen Mill.

I have returned! Plenty of new pic's to edit, in the meantime these are from the trip to the mill I made before going away.

The weir.

Water under the bridge.

The bridge next to the mill.

Bridge, close up.

Looking across the river into the gardens.

The wooden bridge to the gardens.

Close up of the bridge timbers.

View through the trees.

Denbigh Asylum...morning sun.

Taken on my walk this morning, could be summer at last!

Walk to the Stwlan dam 5.

Final shots from the walk.

I'm no geologist, but this looks awfully like an extinct volcano at the rear of the town, Blaenau Ffestiniog.

While making my way down the mountain, trains from the Ffestiniog railway came into view.

The cafe in the foreground, Lakeside Cafe, is where I always stop after my walks for beans on toast and a cup of tea.

Arriving at the station.

Passing trains.

This morning's walk.

Dandelion dew drops.

Red and yellow, don't know it's name!

Denbigh Asylum.

Taken on my walk this morning, a dull and cool May day.

Walk to the Stwlan dam 4.

Side view, more large rocks.

Overflow system and CCTV.

Taking the strain, holding back millions of gallons of water.

The overflow channel.

The overflow runs down the side of the road.

Slate steps in the foreground, slowly being reclaimed by mother nature.

 Marker post.

Mine building ruins.

Slowly crumbling, will be here for a lot more years yet.

Looking down on the hydroelectric power station at the side of the lake.

Walk to the Stwlan dam 3.

Large curbstones.

The dam comes into view.

Looking down on the dam.

The reservoir. During the day water is piped down the mountain to the hydroelectric power station below. When demand for electricity at night is low, the turbines pump the water back up again.

Old mine workings across the lake.

Close up of the mine workings, ceased being used long before the dam was built.

Top of the dam.

Self portrait.

Denbigh Asylum.....latest.

The latest external activity, possibly an outdoor swimming pool! LOL
Another dull and damp morning here in North Wales.

Walk to the Stwlan dam 2.

Large rocks.

A long and winding track.

The way ahead.

 A lonely cloud.

 Small waterfall.

Looking back at the houses below.

Distant mine ruins.

Thursday, 17 May 2012

Walk to the Stwlan dam.

One of the Cwmorthin valley falls.

Two technology's, the building by the lake houses the hydroelectric power station and the building in the far distance is a nuclear power station, now de commissioned.

Looking down the old incline to the lake.

Collapsed incline.

Looking up the incline.

At the top of the incline is a tunnel through the mountain. On the far side of the tunnel are the remains of the old slate dressing sheds.
